March 2019

In 2009 Keaton was diagnosed at the age of 11 months with Infant Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  He went through 3 rounds of chemotherapy, total body irradiation and a sibling donor bone marrow transplant from his 5 year old brother.  He stayed in remission for 4 years and 7 months.  In March of 2014 he was diagnosed with secondary AML, a diagnosis that was likely the result of previous treatments (specifically radiation).  Keaton started intense chemotherapy and developed a fungal infection in his sinuses one month into treatment.  His counts were zero and doctors told us he may not survive.  He had multiple surgeries and miraculously recovered.  He went on to have a second sibling donor transplant from his baby sister who was 2 years old at the time.  Again Keaton stayed in remission for 4 years and 9 months.  On January 31st 2019 he was diagnosed with relapsed ALL (his original dx as an infant).  The next steps are CAR T cell therapy, which is a fairly new treatment and less toxic.
